The International Symposium on Strain Gauge Balances was an initiative of NASA. The aim of the symposium is to be an open international forum for presentation discussion and exchange of technical information among wind tunnel test technique specialists and strain gage balance designers.

Throughout the years, the symposium has maintained its status as an open international forum and its participants still represent a wide range of nations: Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, the Netherlands, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. The open international focus of the symposium has proved to keep the balance community welded together for more than a decade.
